Welcome to the CHJS Governor page. Below is some information about the role of the school governor and an opportunity to learn a little more about the people who volunteer to fulfil these roles.
Governors are appointed, elected or co-opted for a fixed term. The Governing Body is made up of representatives from staff, parents, the community and members nominated by the local authority. The Head teacher is also a Governor.
A full governing body (FGB) meeting is held every half term in school. In addition, governors volunteer for an area of focus: including resources, curriculum and pay and personnel. Additional meetings and working groups around these areas occur throughout the year. Governors also complete school visits with specific focuses, meeting staff, children and seeing the school ‘in action’.
Resources: oversee finance, buildings, grounds, and health and safety
Curriculum: meet to discuss aspects of what is taught in school, performance and progress
Pay & Personnel: meet to discuss staffing
The work of the Governors includes the appointment of staff, overseeing the curriculum policies of the school, admission of pupils to the school, setting and monitoring the school’s budget, contributing to the School Improvement Plan and monitoring the overall effectiveness of the school.
The purpose of having a Governing Body is to:
- help the school to set high standards by planning for the school’s future and setting targets for school improvement;
- keep the pressure up on school improvement;
- be a critical friend to the school, offering support and advice;
- help the school respond to the needs of parents and the community;
- make the school accountable to the public for what it does;
- work with the school on planning, developing policies and keeping the school under review;
- exercise its responsibilities and powers in partnership with the Head teacher and staff but; not intervene in the day-to-day management of the school unless there are weaknesses in the school, when it then has a duty to take action.
