Interventions

Interventions are provided in addition to high quality teaching in the classroom and are an essential part of the additional provision we offer across our school, including those children identified on the SEND register.

Sometimes, an intervention may be necessary to further support a child’s development within a particular area of the curriculum or to help them develop their social skills or self confidence and self esteem. At CHJS there are a number of structured intervention programmes available, that aim to support and develop children’s key skills for the core subjects of English and Maths and also for communication and pastoral care. Interventions are delivered one-to-one and in small groups across the school day and can run between 10 and 30 minutes. The intervention programmes we regularly deploy are noted below, although this list is not exhaustive.

Children are identified for intervention using a range of methods that include data tracking, (attainment and progress), teacher assessment, classroom observation and informal observations of the children in the classroom and in the playground.

It is important to note that children identified for intervention are not always lower attaining children. Children are identified across a range of groups and are selected when teaching staff and senior leaders believe they have the capacity for further or accelerated progress at a given point.

There are four key components to intervention:

  • Proactive: Addresses areas of need before they become a larger obstacle to education.
  • Intentional: Specifically addresses an observed weakness.
  • Formal: Uses targeted methods for addressing specific needs and tracks progress.
  • Flexible: Adjusts methods based upon the needs of the child.

Early Birds
Children may be invited by letter to ‘Early bird’ sessions as part of our extended intervention programme. These intervention sessions run prior to the start of the official school day from 8.40am. Children during these sessions will have a focused session on specific skills (this will be outlined in the letter).

Examples of interventions at CHJS include:

Reporting to parents
We aim to keep parents informed with regards to intervention children are receiving. Class teachers will give an update on the impact of the intervention during parents consultations and parents are asked to look in book bags for intervention cards.

Seagull File
Children identified on the SEND register have a ‘Seagull file’ which outlines SEN provision and includes intervention cards describing provision. This needs to be kept in book bags to go between home and school.

Intervention cards
Children who are not identified on the SEND register will have intervention cards.
